Born to boogaloo
On Saturday night I found myself in The Boogaloo , a small boozer near the tube station in Highgate. They had a DJ playing fubuloid music, well for those who like classic pop: from the Small Faces to Neil Diamond, via the Skatalites, the Smiths and pretty much anything in between. Woo Hooo. As an added bonus, the clientele seem a fairly regular and unpretentious bunch – all too unusual in this most arsy of cities.
The boogaloo juke box is meant to be very good – they have some sort of a musical advisor from Ace Records , who reissue allsorts of good musical sheet from the fifties and sixties. Although because of the DJ, we never got to hear it! Like all good music nerds they seem mad for lists. On the wall next to the juke was a laminated sheet with
Johnny Marr’s top ten favourite albums:
T-Rex – The Slider
Performance – Soundtrack
The Parliaments – Testifyin’
Donovan – Sunshine Superman, best
The Byrds – The very best of
Rolling Stones – Big Hits
Bert Jansch – Jack Onion
Trojan Records – 20 Reggae Blockbusters
Sly and the Family Stone – There’s a riot going on
Django Reinhardt – Best of
So, a little like Alan Partridge, it seems Mr Marr is very fond of best ofs’. On the Booglaloo site, they have more lists from other well known music types too – friends of the stars as well as friends of the lists. Get on down there.
