Downfallising history as it happens
Last Tuesday, November 18 someone leaked the BNP’s membership list to the press, by Friday it had been Downfallised. The drama of the leaks was now played out in the subtitles under Hitler’s deranged ranting in the film Downfall.
Apparently the scene has been used on 150 odd YouTube clips, from Ronaldo leaving Man Utd to numerous stories from the US election. This version is very savvy – it covers the uploading of the list onto wikileaks and the mash up on Google Maps – as well as being pretty darn funny. I love the ‘I’m no racist…Something has to be done’. They even manage a dig at UKIP too.
The whole Downfallising phenomenon already has a section on Wikipedia and today The Times ran an article on it. It has grown so big it’s almost worthy of a media studies module. I can only apologize that I only heard about it yesterday and didn’t manage to put it up til today – so it’s almost Internet history by now.
