Driving through rainbows

The rain was up ahead, we could see the ominous purple-black clouds in front of us, but so far it wasn’t falling on us. Autumn had to point out a rainbow, as it was quite faint and I hadn’t seen it. Brushed against the bruised sky it arched down over the road from our left.

It can’t have been long since it had rained, the other cars on the motorway splashed up a silver spray. I tried to increase the distance between us and the car in the front. Then, gradually we started to see the light catch the spray; small rainbows formed around each car ahead.

When a car in the fast lane sped past one in the middle lane, we saw, for a few moments, the spray from all three lanes merging. The individual rainbows now stretched across the road as one spectrum.

The road turned left and opened up. The end of the rainbow, which had petered out in trees, now washed into the road. Ever-so-briefly, we drove through a mist of colour that stretched into velvet rain clouds ahead.
