Monsieur Camembert is an Australian gypsy/klezmer band whose latest project is covering the songs of Leonard Cohen. They’ve got some really good versions that bring out the humour of the man’s music - something that non-fans seem to neglect. The album is called Famous Blue Cheese.
On their myspace pages, the women are especially good - and really bring to life Light as a Breeze, a much neglected but in my opinion fabulous song. The chaps do a really good version of Closing Time. Good sh*t, pity they don’t seem to have any plans to visit the UK at the moment - well not according to their myspace pages. The CD is a bit dear at $40 Australian Dollars, but I suppose the strong pound means we get a better deal than usual.
