Join your very local library

Slewfootsnoop recommends all aspiring journalists and citizen journalists should join their local libraries. Possibly this advice applies to everyone. Not only does your local library have books, DVDs, CDs and internet access, but they also have some useful online subscriptions open to their members.

This means you can log on to the Oxford English Dictionary and the Encyclopaedia Britannica from home. These services on there own should make the five minute registration process worthwhile. There’s also a few slightly more esoteric services available too: Kompass lets you search information about international businesses and KnowUK is ‘ultimate online library of UK information’. The Times Digital Archive lets you search every copy of The Times (of London) since 1785, which apparently is useful for searching family history. NewsUK is a cuttings service for more recent news.

Wowzers, what a discovery and it’s all paid for by our council tax.
